Girls Under 14s - Match Reports - 2007-8
****************************** Sunday 27 January 2008
Tynedale 39 DMP 31
We travelled to Tynedale today and what a game! We went with a little apprehension ... Tynedale’s team is well trained and their winger is a flying machine.
DMPRFC’s team, comprised of Lauren (Capt.), Ruth, Sophie (Bert), Sarah, Kathryn, Shelly, Emily, and Leanne, put mountains of effort into a very close run game.
Sophie, Leanne and Lauren scored five tries between them. Leanne’s was her first of hopefully many to come and Lauren scored a hat trick.
Lauren narrowly missed the conversion of her first try inches from the up rights, although as she had made a run from our own twenty two, she may have been a little out of breath.
Following the second try from Sophie, Lauren made the decision to pass the kicking tee over. Sophie, who was waiting in the wings, stepped up to the mark and in true family fashion made the kick look easy, right through the centre of the posts. The next two went the same way, with precision they sailed clean over the post to secure the first half score of 15 – 26.
Leanne out on the wing was involved in a big hit from the Tynedale forwards, at first it looked quiet serious, her hip coming into contact with three Tynedale girls but in true DMPRFC fashion she shook off the pain and returned to the game.
Shelly was on form, ducking and weaving through the Tynedale line time and time again - they just couldn’t get a tackle in before she fed the ball out. Even though she had hurt her shoulder during the closing minutes of the first half, she returned to the field shortly after the second half started and again put on a marvellous display,
Sarah playing as scrum half fired the ball out from every break down fighting hard in the rucks and mauls for possession, not letting go at all. She made the game for the backs giving them plenty of good ball.
Emily, Ruth and Sophie were a big influence in the forward game, Tynedale didn’t know what was hitting them, and every time the ball was taken into contact one of them was there in support.
Emily and Ruth made some fantastic tackles and every time they received the ball guaranteed yardage beyond the game line.
Now I know where Carl and Rose get it from - they must be studying Emily’s and Ruth’s game.
Kathryn had a blinder of a game; all the girls towered over her but she took them out on the wing time and time again not letting go and slowing the game down until support arrived from the forwards.
Down to seven girls during the last 3 minutes of the first half and the opening minutes of the second half due to injuries, the girls dug deep and soldiered on without conceding any tries.
From a penalty, Lauren went over for her third try of the day, a quick tap and she was through - good thinking and an excellent rugby mind saw her duck for the line right under the oppositions noses & they couldn’t do anything to stop her
Unfortunately in the last three minutes of the game Tynedale found a gap and went over and finally kicked their first conversion of the day.
Following the restart and from what we had thought was a knock on, Tynedale scored the last try of the afternoon and converted it.
In the dying moments of the game, DMPRFC were camped on the Tynedale 10m line but just did not have the strength to close the gap.
It was a pleasure to watch our U14 Girls put on a fantastic display of rugged determination, a credit to our women’s section at Mowden, with all our girls having the potential to play for the Sharks in the future.
Comment from the coach
I am speechless - all I can say is they were fantastic! They all turn up on Thursday night in all weathers and we might not get through all of the drills as I would hope, but something must have sunk in they didn’t drop the ball once. I am really pleased with each of them, they played their hearts and souls out there today.
