Seniors 1st Team Match Report - 2007-8

DMPRFC  52  -  Tries: Clark (2), Brown, Dixon, Connolly, Batty, Foreman, Vinnicombe. Cons: Benson (6)

RUGBY LIONS  0

A thoroughly professional performance by the players, in a game that had a great deal of importance attached to it, for the future of our club.

As the rain did it's best to upset the odds, Rugby Lions were no match for us on this occasion. They were certainly not the team previously encountered by us earlier in the season when they were vying for honours. But, as the score dictates, we never allowed them to play, however they certainly had not travelled to 'lie down' quietly, as some may have anticipated. It was to their credit, that, obviously depleted, they battled away all game to no avail, but are safe in the knowledge that National rugby is still for them next season.

As for us, it was always going to go down to the wire after the Macclesfield result.

As has been said, the rain did it's best to interfere and the pitch, due to the full capacity of the nearby beck interfering with the drainage, didn't help the cause.

However, after an intial period of possession by Rugby, the rest, as they say, was history. We always looked capable of beaking through out wide, although the forwards battled well and things augur well for next weekends titanic battle against Morley.

First, James Clark seized the opportunity when afforded space for the first time by the speed of pass from Jon Benson and whilst introducing his pace to the opposite fullback, rounded the latter to score after around eight minutes. Jon Benson converting.

Tries followed from Danny Brown, Iain Dixon, Jamie Connolly, Ross Batty, Andy Foreman and Paul Vinnicombe, before James Clark socred his eleventh try of the season, his second of the game, to round off the scoring.

Six conversions from the boot of Jon Benson jollied along the scoring, culminating in a 52 point demolition, but more importantly, a clean sheet. It would have been easy to allow a couple of scores against, but it is to the credit of the players that no-one was crossing our threshhold on the day and resolute defending ensured no transgressions in that regard.

So, onwards and hopefully upwards towards next weekend and then hopefully the weekend after that, then after that .................who knows!!

Durham County Senior Cup, Semi-Final

DMPRFC    5

WESTOE RFC   46

It was always going to be a tall order, pitching the 2ND XV in against Westoe 1ST XV. It wasn't the best plan, but the alternative was to play an injury ravaged 1ST XV or concede the game, which would then have allowed the South Shields club to progress to the final, without having played a game and that doesn't bode well for a County Cup competition with so much history.

Time will tell if it was the correct decision, but at least it gave the 1ST XV a chance to recover somewhat from some worrying injuries and they should thank their understudies for the rest.

Although the final score looks large, it in no way reflects the tremendous effort that the lads put in and they all should be congratulated for such a spirited showing, even though they were probably 'thrown in at the deep end'.

Westoe, as expected arrived with a strong side and to be fair, they could only play what was in front of them. They used the catch and drive ploy effectively, were disruptive on our scrummage and were able to appear invisible on the referee's offside radar. All in all, no doubt, the better team on the day and we can certainly have no complaints. However, if their ambitions are National Three (North), they will need big improvements in tactics and personnel, should they achieve their ambitions, as on that performance they definately will not 'cut the mustard'.

No at all sour grapes, just some friendly advice which they can take or leave, but would do well to heed.

To select any individuals from the game would be unfair as everyone played their part in a decent effort and more importantly, it gave some of our younger players an opportunity to test their skills against reasonable opposition.

We were proud of the lads today and it shows that whatever the expected result, they turned up and gave of their best and in that respect they did everything we asked of them.

WEST PARK ST. HELENS RFC     21

A creditable performance, but at what cost!

Despite a concentrated and focused build up, we again started slowly out of the traps, having to defend several phases from the initial kick off and despite the ease in which we repelled our opponents advances in those early minutes, we know that a quick start is essential in order to maintain our current progress.

The game, although being remembered for two mesmeric tries by James Clark on his way to his hatrick and another fine performance from Gareth Kerr in matching his compatriot. It will also be remembered for the catalogue of injuries to players from both sides, which elongated the game considerably and dealt us so cruel a blow to key players.

Others who chipped in over the whitewash were Aaron Myers, Iain Dixon, Paul Vinnicombe and Robbie Kalbraier, with the rest itching to register scores. From a defensive perspective, the endeavours of Tony Begovich did not go unnoticed and it is this type of 'never say die' attitude that has enveloped the whole squad, whether it be on our travels, or at Yiewsley Drive.

The cost of the victory though, were injuries to Chris Clark, Jamie Connolly, Gareth Kerr, Dan Miller and Shaun Buckley. Luckily, there is a break in league proceedings until our away fixture at Macclesfield on 29-03-08, so there may be time for those individuals to recover.

Ten tries always look excellent on paper, but we know that it should have been more and we must be somewhat disappointed in the manner in which we conceded three tries to a struggling West Park St. Helens outfit.

But then the dilemma of this weekends Durham County Senior Cup clash, at home, against our old friends Westoe. News of our injuries will have filtered through the local rugby networks by now and our opponents will relish the opportunity to put one over on us on our patch. However, we will not want to relinquish the County Cup that easily and thoughts of doing so are a very long way from our minds.

There may be opportunities this week for those fringe players to stake a claim in the 'towards end of season' proceedings and that can only augur well for the current playing state of the club and our future.

Also, it will not have gone unnoticed in rugby circles, that Cinderford only registered a draw against struggling Clifton. Could it be that there is being pressure being put on by some unearthly force, some outside influence of magical proportions, some 'eebee geebies' at point critical or did they just have a bad day at the office. Who knows, but what we do all know is.......................

Leicester Lions   11

DMPRFC            14 (Tries: Riddell, Kerr. Cons: Snook (2))

Gutted! That is how all connected to Leicester Lions will feel about the game.

A game, which saw them, dominate most of the attacking play, the scrums, the linouts and in effect most facets of the game. But what they didn't seem to comprehend was, this is league rugby and 'it's never over till it's over!'

The simple fact was that their lead, unless improved upon at 11-0 up at 'oranges', was never going to be enough and always left us that chink in their armour.

There is no doubting that for long periods of the game, we never looked like scoring, seemingly spending most of our time defending the centre of the field. But after a constant barrage for the first fifteen minutes was repelled at a cost to us of only three points, we again found ourselves in familiar territory and coped better.

The three yellow cards undoubtedly did not help the cause and taking those refereeing decisions out of the equation, if we are ultimately going to succeed in this or any other league, we must learn to eradicate that senseless, often costly part of our game, as it will eventually cost us dear.

They must have thought they'd done enough, when in the midst of a howling crosswind, they crossed the whitewash once, adding the conversion to the earlier penalty. This, coupled with the added complications of three yellow cards and the fact that a lot of our attacking play was thwarted by some good defence and final ball handling errors, all combined to a false sense of security as by now, they'd written us off.

But, give us our due, we were given several minutes of opportunity and we capitalised big style. Substitutions had been made and re-made, as Scott Riddell finished off a powerful forwards drive with a burst to the line through defenders. The extras were not easy in the conditions, but Ben Snook showed his worth, by calmly slotting between the posts. The final nail for the Lions came when they themselves, down to fourteen men, failed to cope with their loss. After interpassing between our front row, Gareth Kerr found some space, rounded his opposite number and scored. Again, although closer to the posts this time, Ben Snook had the aplomb to prevail, dissecting the uprights to tumultuous applause from the travelling faithful.

A minor late scare, where Lions had the opportunity to tie the game with a penalty, was bound to fail, as by then the Lions had been tamed and ushered back to the Park from whence they came.

No more scares like that please Park, it might be fun for you, but old men have a tendency to incontinence in times of stress.

Keep the faith!

BRADFORD & BINGLEY RFC.  21

Anyone looking at the score who was not present at the game, could be forgiven for thinking that the result was straight forward. In reality, this couldn't be further from the truth, in a game that was quite literally the advocate for that old cliche, 'a game of two halves'.

The first half belonged to Bradford and Bingley and definately some credit will have to go to The Bees, as they have had a torrid time with injuries. Unfortunately the only points they can take out of this fixture, will be some solace in the fact that the players they have recruited have jelled with the other more established players and this should see them safe at the death. Indeed, it will be nice for them to help our fortunes by pushing Leicester Lions in similar fashion, when they entertain them in two weeks time. But let's not dwell on thoughts of other people doing us a favour, let's concentrate on what we can do for ourselves.

As has been said in previous reports, most teams would just shut up shop and try to keep the scoreline reasonably respectable, when losing 21 - 0 at home and with not much of the first half left to play. But there was a hint of the fightback that was to come before 'oranges', which was stimulated by the running skills of the Clark twins, culminating after good handling, in a try by Chris, with James being the provider (I hope it's the right way around, but if it's not then from now on one of them is definately called Butch)

All thoughts of first half woes were immediately expunged after the break, as the home players set about constructing scoring opportunities and concentrating on the team ethos that has brought so many recent rewards. It was important that the next score was ours and this proved to be the case, as James, I mean Butch Clark crossed for a try. Another followed from substitute Danny Brown, who took the field after half-time, together with Aaron Myers and both injected the required momentum. In the latter stages a further try was scored by winger (not) Paul Vinnicombe, who displaced a couple of Bees defenders before crossing the whitewash. This was accompanied by three conversions from Charlie Rayner, who sealed what may to some, have seemed an improbable victory, with us claiming all five points in the process.

We all realise the importance of this coming weekend, but we must accept the harsh reality of the fact that we can't afford to give our forthcoming opponents a sniff of any sort of result, because if we do, then there is an ever present danger that all this hard work will have counted for nothing.

But the main thing is...................

COME ON YOU PARK!

PRESTON GRASSHOPPERS  13 (Try: Barry. Con: Flynn. Pens: Flynn (2))

DMPRFC  30 (Tries: J. Clark (2), C.Clark (2), Riddell. Con: Benson. Pen: Snook)

Another win away from home and a further step up the ladder towards that second spot and play off place.

However, it all started off badly, as a very late arriving bus interfered with the pre-match preparations and the players' reaction to this was a less than satisfactory first half performance, littered with schoolboy like penalties and yellow cards for Luke Monument and Ross Batty. Indeed, we seemed to conspire to keep Hoppers in the game in the early stages, as we couldn't establish any sort of decent platform from which to piece together anything tangible in the form of playing pattern.

There had been a lot of talk in the clubhouse about Hoppers' team being decimated by various injuries. But every team in the league are or have been in the same situation as regard that problem, including us. To be fair to Hoppers', their plight wasn't helped by their No. 8 retiring early on in the first half, being replaced by a player who had already toiled for 80 minutes for the second team in a losing early kick off game against Fylde.

Hoppers' weren't a bad side though, with a decent pack of young forwards and incisive backs, including their own version of 'bigfoot' on the wing, they were certainly in the game, right up until half time and at one stage led 13 - 12.

We were a different side after 'oranges' as we showed our hosts why we are up there in the high echelons of the league, with six wins from seven games, including four away from home and the only blemish, a single loss to the league leaders Tynedale.

Hoppers' were never in it after that, with a total of five tries being scored acquiring all five league points, there were no further points registered for our opponents on the impressive electronic scoreboard.

With toil and industry at the coal face from messrs. Dan Miller, Ross Batty and Robbie Kalbraier, ably assisted in that regard by Luke Monument and Paul Vinnicombe, the back row, although missing that relentlessness of Aaron Myers, combined to produce worthy contributions in attack and defence from the hard tackling Tony Begovich, Phil Dawson and Scott Riddell, the latter capping off a fine game with a try in the second half.

But it was the backs who stole the show, with an impressive display of running attack, which lay down the foundations for four excellent tries. The Clark twins, James and Chris seemed to be everywhere about the field and it was no surprise that between them they scored FOUR tries. Andy Foreman and Jon Benson contrived to probe Hoppers' defences and with the return of Jamie Connolly, that stability he brings was certainly to our advantage. Ben Snook showing his versatility at full back, giving notice that he is more than capable of slotting in, in any of the back positions when required.

So even the delay due to an unfortunate accident on the M6, didn't dampen the spirits of the boys on the return journey and to what we hoped was going to be an England win in Paris (which turned out to be the case).

With a Leicester loss at home to the improving Harrogate and Rugby Lions winning again, only six points separate our three teams for the silver medal and this promises to be an eventful few weeks in the leagues, as we play both teams, in what could ultimately decide that final play-off position................I wonder!

CALDY RFC 21 (Tries: Wylie, Pennington. Pens: Roberts (3) Cons: Roberts)

DMPRFC     27 (Tries: Monument, Riddell, Miller. Pens: Benson (2)
                      Snook. Cons: Benson (2) Snook)

An important win away from home, which cements third spot in the league and edges us ever closer to that final second place finish, which would entitle us to a play off promotion game probably away and probably against Mounts Bay or Cinderford (don't ask!)

An excellent, all round team effort contributed to the winning of the game, where at one stage we were down to 13 men and we actually scored more points than our opponents during that period.

It all started off badly, with Caldy, as usual, starting well, amassing 15 unanswered points in the first half hour of the game, starting with a penalty by Roberts after only three minutes, then tries by Wylie and Pennington, the latter converted by Roberts.

So, fifteen points down after the first half hour, away from home and things looking ominous. Earlier in the season, that possibly would have been a recipe for a poor defeat. But, as has been said more than once recently, there is more than just a suggestion of resilience and character about our tightly knit team at present, which hopefully we can retain right until the end of the season and hopefully beyond.

Therefore, it was no surprise that just before the break, we responded with two tries in five minutes. Both after catch and drives from lineouts, the former scored by Luke Monument and the latter by Scott Riddell. Both were converted by Jon Benson, who should receive extra praise as he played the game despite being ill.

So at half time the score had reached 15 - 14 and although this was in Caldy's favour, we were very much in it at 'oranges'.

After the break Jon Benson slotted an early penalty, but this advantage was cancelled out by Caldy's Roberts, following a bizarre period of sin binning, which threatened to de-rail our comeback. Firstly, it was a Caldy player, Lyon who was shown the yellow card for not retreating after a penalty on 51 minutes. He was followed by Mowden's Tony Begovich and then Andy Foreman on 60 minutes and 63 minutes respectively, for going over the top of a ruck and alleged stamping, the former leading to the Roberts' successful penalty.

Apart from this, there was also a game going on and fortunately Mowden seemed to realise this sooner than their hosts, scoring a further ten unanswered points. Dan Miller went over for a score near the posts and replacement Ben Snook (thanks Ben's mum) kicked the conversion and a penalty to make the score 21-27.

Despite some attempts by Caldy to recover, the writing was on the wall and dynamic defence saw out the game and victory for DMPRFC.

The team effort is all-important and it is sometimes unnecessary to single out individuals, but special mention again to Jon Benson, who made a vital contribution despite illness and also for the return of Jamie Connolly, who by all accounts controlled the midfield like we know he can.

And finally remember...................

COME ON YOU PARK!

DMPRFC - 30 - Tries: Batty, Rayner, J. Clark, Pens: Benson (3), Cons: Benson (3)

HARROGATE RFC - 24 - Tries: Wilson, Brown, Boyle (2), Cons: Wainwright (2)

Another close encounter, against a much improved Harrogate side, who arrived at Yiewsley Drive after a run of three winning games off the belt, full of confidence and intent on reversing their defeat at our hands at Claro Road earlier in the season.

Again we were slow out of the traps and allowed Harrogate to dominate the initial exchanges, fortunately to no avail, thanks in part to some aggressive defence, but also some errors on their part.

A penalty from John Benson was all DMPRFC had to show for our efforts, until Ross Batty appeared in the centre of midfield, bursting through the defence to score under the posts. John Benson added the conversion, giving us a 10-0 lead.

A succession of home team infringements was not punished by the away side, when kicker Wainwright, failed to capitalise, missing two and watching another two which he had kicked for territory in the hope of forward catch and drives, peter out to nothing.

They did have success though, when lock forward Wilson appeared on the right wing to score from 10 metres out and again just before the break, when scrum half Brown nipped in the corner after a decent rolling maul by the forwards. Wainwright converting one of the tries.

So at half-time, Harrogates orange segments must have tasted better, with a lead of 10-12 and we were left thinking about missed tackles and wasted opportunities.

When the second half got underway, Mowden seemed to have remedied their first half blues, when winger Chris Clark put Charlie Rayner over after enterprising play from replacement flanker Scott Riddell. Jon Benson converting.

Another Harrogate attack, saw an attacking penalty kicked to touch and workmanlike No. 8 Boyle score a after a successfull traditional catch and drive.

When a further two penalties were slotted by Jon Benson, as well as a conversion from a try scored by James Clark, it looked like a comfortable afternoon was in the offing for DMPRFC as the scoreline registered a tally of 30 points.

However, Harrogate had not read that script and with plenty of time left on the clock, Boyle scored his second try, which was converted by Wainwright.

It was then all hands to the pumps for the final period of the game, as Harrogate, to their credit, mounted a series of repeated counter attacks in an attempt to win the game. Fortunately, even when going down to 14 men, due to the sin-binning of prop Robbie Kalbraier, Mowdens resolute defence held out, revealing a final score of 30-24 and a deserved victory.

Fylde RFC -  27 -  Tries: Brennard (2), Royle - Pens: Armstrong(2) - Cons: Armstrong (2)

DMPRFC - 34 - Tries: J. Clark (2), C. Clark, Dixon (2), - Pens: Rayner, Cons: Rayner (3)

It is the first time we have travelled to The Woodlands on the West coast and returned with a win against a Fylde side that always provide tough opposition.

A re-shuffling of the back line due to injury, saw Chris Clark in at scrum half, where he gave a good account of himself and he was instrumental in a lot that was good about DMPRFC during the game. Early period domination of possession by the home side, gave them several opportunities to score, but it was the Mowden defence who remained resolute.

A Charlie Rayner penalty from a forward indiscretion was successful on 15 minutes and good work by the Mowden back row ensured that Fylde either lost the ball in contact or were turned over in the breakdown. One such occasion led to wing James Clark racing through unopposed. The conversion was missed by Rayner.

Fylde then scored a good try themselves by the leagues top try scorer Brennand, who beat four defenders on his way to score under the posts on the half hour mark, which was converted by Armstrong.

Two tries by DMPRFC in a five-minute period just before the break, were to ultimately lay the foundations for the victory. The first try, was James Clark's second of the game, where he received the ball after a passage of good handling, strolling through the Fylde defence with ease. Unfortunately, in the build up, Tom Wilkinson injured his ankle and took no further part in the game, being replaced by Ben Snook.

Another penalty by Armstrong interrupted the Mowden scoring, but the next try scored under the posts by full back Iain Dixon, after good initial work by Charlie Rayner, was to be of huge importance in the game and with Charlie Rayner's second conversion, Mowden went in at half time 22-10 up, despite the superior possession time of their hosts.

The re-start saw several changes by Fylde in an attempt to swing the game and they thought that they would be helped by the referee, who on 48 minutes, decided that Luke Monument had killed the ball enough and showed him the yellow card. From the resultant penalty penalty by Armstrong, Fylde perhaps thought that this was their opportunity, but conversely the killer blow was delivered DMPRFC, when the impressive Chris Clark on 53 minutes, shot through their defence, after a slick piece of inter-passing to score a deserved try. Although the conversion was missed, a 27-13 lead looked to be enough.

This was underlined when full back Iain Dixon was quick to anticipate a Fylde attack and raced a full 60 metres to score under the posts. Rayner converted giving what was thought to be an unassailable lead on 60 minutes.

However, Fylde did not see it that way and scored two further converted tries, probably due to Mowden's complacency in the latter stages, to leave a closing scoreline of 34-27 and a vital win regardless.

DMPRFC - 14 (Tries - Foreman, Penalty Try. Cons - Benson (2) )

TYNEDALE RFC - 35 (Tries - Murray, Harrison (2), Beasley, Miller. Cons - Belgian (5) )

After much deliberation in relation to the outcome of the clash between DMPRFC and TYNEDALE RFC, the game sadly, was to be remembered for the unfortunate serious leg injury to DMPRFC second-row forward Ciaran McNicholas, who unfortunately suffered a double tibia and fibula fracture of his leg, which required surgery the following day.

As far as the actual game was concerned, I don't think that anyone at DMPRFC could deny that Tynedale were worthy winners, showing the spectators why they are top of National Division Three and likely promotion winners.

The overall try count was five for Tynedale and two to DMPRFC; which included a penalty try for collapsing the scrum, when a pushover try was likely.

A disappointing result from a DMPRFC perspective, but with most National League Three outfits suffering the same fate at the hands of Tynedale this season, we can definately look ahead to the remainder of the league programme with some anticipation as to our eventual final table position.

The way results and postponements went in the other fixtures, saw no change in our bronze medal position in the table, but in order to maintain that 3rd spot, we will have to bounce back at Fylde next week, to stand any chance of being in the mix at the end.

It all starts on the training paddock during the forthcoming week, with sessions on Tuesday 22nd and 24th at Houghton planned to hopefully return us back to winning ways on our travels to the West coast on Saturday 26th January.

Beverley - 10

DMP - 26 (Tries: Begovich, Batty, C.Clark (2). Cons: Benson 3)

The Hull result last week was always going to be hard to follow, but for some uncharacteristic forward passes and knock-ons, there may have been a repeat scoreline on our visit to Beaver Park.

Nevertheless, we avenged an 'earlier on in the season' home defeat with a respectable away performance, which augurs well for the visit of league leaders Tynedale to Yiewsley Drive on Saturday 19th January 2008.

Another creditable effort by the entire 'back row' who were tireless in defence and ever supportive in attack, lay the foundation for the victory.

The fourth try bonus point was a welcome addition to the normal points tally and these points elevated us to third spot in a very competitive league, where it appears that 'on their day' everyone is capable of beating anyone else.

Training is key and the players realise that attendance at all projected sessions is paramount if we are to 'push on' from now until the end of the season. The next two weeks training is vital in order that we maintain our current form and show our determination to play open and attractive rugby consistently.

Hull Ionians - 0

In one of the best games seen at Yiewsley Drive for several years, a sizeable crowd watched DMPRFC overwhelm a Hull Ionians side, with a scintillating display of open, running rugby, scoring ten tries in the process and picking up five valuable league points.

In bitter cold conditions, on a pitch that did credit to the efforts of Graham Sykes, DMPRFC absorbed a 10 minute period of intense pressure, where the opposition forward dominated gameplan, which was clear from the outset, was thwarted by robust defence from the home side.

From that period onwards Ionians were never in the game and at stages were reduced to spectators themselves as the pace of DMPRFC blew them away, leaving them shell-shocked with a score of 36-0 at half-time.

It may have been expected that the pace would not be as intense after the re-start, but no such luck for Ionians, who obviously were praying for an early final whistle (so that they could rush off to a bit of a losing Christmas Party at York) as DMPRFC added more points than they scored in the previous half.

Another 38 points in the second half saw a deserved 74-0 victory, in which every player, including the replacements, emerged with Man of the Match credit for their part in a superb team performance.

Just before the half hour mark Benson added a second penalty goal but Macclesfield got a second try on 39 minutes with replacement Frazer Hall going over and they led 12-6.

Three minutes into the 2nd half and Macc were further ahead with right wing Adam Fisher touching down and Winney converted for 19-6. Just after the hour mark, Benson got a try for the home side but they were still two scores behind.
